Security challenges at data centres
A data centre is a high-value target: information, hardware and access rights of critical importance are concentrated in one place. Regulatory, customer and insurance requirements are placing ever-increasing demands on documented physical security – and availability is just as critical as confidentiality.
Layered access control from lobby to server room
Data centres typically operate with 4–6 security zones: lobby, common area, co-location corridor, customer zone, server corridor and critical equipment room. Axis CCTV – high resolution, scalable
Axis is the world-leading supplier of network cameras and is particularly well positioned for data centres. We specify and install Axis cameras for server corridors (high resolution, good depth of field for rack identification), entrances and receptions (multi-sensor, wide coverage), perimeter (PTZ with zoom, night vision) and technical rooms. All cameras are integrated into Genetec Security Center for centralised management, logging and image archive.
Access control with zone-based access management
We design and install access control systems based on the data centre's zone layout. Differentiated access per employee, role and time period. Physical perimeter security: fencing, barrier, ANPR licence plate recognition and secured car park. Technical perimeter security: CCTV of building façade and entrance, motion sensors, movement-activated lighting and integrated alarm on perimeter breach. Everything is integrated into Genetec Security Center for centralised alerting and response.
Project management and coordination
Solid Sikring offers dedicated project management for installation in operational data centres. We coordinate all phases: cabling and infrastructure, installation within maintenance windows to minimise operational disruption, FAT/SAT testing, system documentation and training of operations staff. Experience with parallel coordination alongside cooling, power and IT contractors.
Locks, hardware and certified mechanical barriers
We supply and install FG-approved security doors, lock bodies, hardware and cylinder systems for all zones in the data centre. We map the resistance class per zone and recommend the appropriate RC class. We integrate mechanical security with electronic access control – iLOQ, card-based, biometric or a combination. It depends on the scope, but we always plan installations so that operations are not disrupted. Cabling and infrastructure work is typically carried out outside core hours or within defined maintenance windows. A full-scale installation with access control, CCTV and alarm in a mid-size data centre typically takes 4–12 weeks from project start to a fully configured and tested system. We assign a dedicated project manager who coordinates with the operations team and other contractors.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) means using two different factors to verify identity – for example an access card combined with a PIN. Biometric access is one form of 2FA where a biological characteristic (fingerprint, iris, face) is used as one of the factors. For server rooms we recommend card + PIN as a baseline minimum, and biometric authentication for the most sensitive zones. Both options integrate with Genetec Security Center and provide a full audit log.

We supply and install security grating and grilles for technical openings and ventilation intakes, security doors and hatches for server rooms and critical equipment rooms, FG-approved security cylinders and lock bodies, and we carry out locksmith work in connection with new installations or the upgrading of existing ones. Everything is delivered with documentation of the resistance class (RC class) and installed in accordance with current requirements – ready for use in insurance and customer audits.
Yes – and this is the rule rather than the exception for data centre projects. However, working in an operational data centre requires thorough preparation. We always begin with a risk mapping exercise in which we identify which tasks can be carried out without restrictions, which require coordination with the operations team, and which must be scheduled within defined maintenance windows with restricted access to active rack rows and critical infrastructure. Based on this mapping, we produce a detailed work plan with clear phases, time slots and accountability points. The installation itself is carried out by experienced technicians with a proven track record in operational data centres – they understand the risks, know the procedures and work in a way that does not put operations at risk. A dedicated project manager is responsible for coordinating with the operations team, IT department and any other contractors throughout the project.
